Positive Activities for Youth

Parent and Teen Classes

  • Salt Lake County Youth Services offers free parenting and teen classes. Learn more here.
    • Guiding Good Choices – This program consists of five classes designed for parents with children ages 9 to 14 and is taught in both English and Spanish. In these classes, parents will learn about how to prevent drug use in their families, managing family conflict, how to control anger, and strengthening family relationships.     • Staying Connected With Your Teen – This online program is available to parents of children ages 12-17 and teaches them about managing family conflict, communication skills, decision making, teen development, and how to be a positive influence in their child’s life. The program consists of five classes. For more information, please contact:

    • ME Time – This is a six class program meant for teens ages 13-17 who are experiencing mild symptoms of depression. Teens will practice challenging  negative thoughts and emotions and learn how to use positive coping mechanisms. If you are interested in registering your teen, please contact:

    • Breaking the Chain – This online program is 12 classes long and is available to teens ages 14-19.  Teens will learn about myths regarding drug abuse and the consequences of using drugs as well as building decision-making skills, positive thinking, and how to listen to others with an open mind. Community Classes at SLCC

  • Salt Lake Community College offers the community access to a variety of resources, many at little to no cost. Learn more here.
    • Youth Camps  – SLCC offers a variety of summer programs designed to educate and inspire youth (elementary to high school students) in a variety of STEM, theater, and athletic camps. Participants expand their education and skills while having fun and making new friends.
    • Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership & Community Engagement – SLCC’s Thayne Center for Student Life, Leadership & Community Engagement connects students to resources and programs that cultivate empowerment, leadership, and social change. Through its community partnership program, the Center fosters lasting, mutually beneficial relationships with community organizations and serves as a resource to the community.
    • Community Writing Center – SLCC’s Community Writing Center offers a variety of workshops to teach community members of all ages how to become a better writer of short stories, resumes, college application essays, poetry, and more. Walk-in assistance is free. Workshops range from low to no cost.
    • Know Greater Heroes – The SLCC Know Greater Heroes Program partners college athletes with elementary aged students and their families, empowering them to be active, live healthfully, choose education, and that each person is their own Hero!     • Learn and Work Program – If you are a Utah resident looking for an opportunity to enhance your career or start a new one, funding through Learn & Work and Salt Lake Community College is now available to cover the full costs of short-term training courses and certificate programs designed to put you on the path to success. To get started today, choose from the list of eligible courses/programs to learn more about your area of interest, including how to apply, register, and receive financial support.

Improving Family Communication

Parents play a significant role in their teen’s development, but many families struggle with communication and bonding. Below are some helpful resources to reconnect your family and have meaningful conversations.

  • ParentsEmpowered.org is a statewide initiative in Utah that provides valuable information on how to talk to your teen about underage drinking and encourage conversations at the dinner table.
  • LawFirm.com has an informative page for parents about the dangers of vaping.

Prevention

Vaping Prevention for Youth

Vaping Prevention is a top priority for Magna United Communities that Care to focus on, especially in the youth population. Many people believe that there aren’t any dangers of using an electronic vaping device and that it’s not as risky as smoking cigarettes. In reality, the vape from these devices often contain various toxic chemicals and Nicotine. The Children’s Service Society of Utah (CSS) is dedicated to empowering families, caregivers, and professionals by offering services that promote the safety and well-being of children. As Utah’s oldest non-profit provider, CSS has a long-standing commitment to the community. CSS offers personalized services to those entrusted with the welfare of our children. Granite School District Prevention & Student Placement

The Granite School District Prevention and Student Placement’s provide students with access to educational services to help them make positive choices and avoid harmful behaviors. There is a specific emphasis on preventing suicide, drug, alcohol, and tobacco use, bullying, weapons, and unsafe or threatening behaviors. For student placement, the program aims to facilitate appropriate placement through their guardianship, safe schools, and foreign exchange student programs.

Magna Kennecott Senior Center

The Magna Kennecott Senior Center, situated on the historic Magna Main Street, plays a vital role in nourishing the needs of the local aging population.  By providing  advocacy, fostering engagement, and offering easy access to essential resources.  Magna Kennecott- Aging and Adult Services aims to empower individuals over 60 to maintain their independence and lead fulfilling lives as active community members. At Huntsman Cancer Institute, we provide clinical care, access to research, clinical trials, and education. One of our biggest priorities is being involved with the community to provide education about cancer screening and prevention, as well as connect them to resources.

Utah Community Action

Founded in 1965, Utah Community Action is one of the largest nonprofit agencies dedicated to fighting poverty and its root causes in Utah. UCA provides six core programs– Case Management & Housing, Head Start Preschool, HEAT utility assistance, Nutrition, Weatherization for homes, and Workforce Development.  The mission of Utah Community Action is to empower individuals, strengthen families, and build communities through self-reliance and education programs. Utah Friends of Basset Hounds brings awareness and education to the adoption of dogs.  They aim to create a friendly and supportive environment for those considering dog adoption.  They will help you learn about the rewards and challenges of bringing a new furry friend home. Magna Kearns Youth Court

Magna Kearns Youth Court (MKYC) is a restorative justice process serving as an alternative to the traditional Juvenile Justice system.  MKYC is dedicated to a restorative justice process that provides alternative paths to accountability while increasing protective factors and improving positive youth outcomes.

The Unified Police Department is committed to working in partnership with the Magna community.  Their goal is to provide the highest quality law enforcement services. They aim at minimizing crime and maximizing confidence, safety and overall quality of life for everyone.

 

Lead Poisoning Prevention Program

The Salt Lake County Office of Regional Development aims to protect families from the dangers of lead-based paint poisoning.  The Lead Poisoning Prevention Program joins Magna City at events to educate.  Community members can learn more about the importance of lead testing and how to ensure a safe environment for their families.

Utah Domestic Violence Coalition

CenExelJBR Clinical Research

CenExel JBR is a medical research clinic that has been serving our community for nearly forty years. They provide no cost surgical procedures for individuals who may not be able to afford them, or for those who have limited access to healthcare coverage.  CenExel JBR clinic works with board certified surgeons, 24/7 doctor and nursing care, and patients get paid for their time and participation!  For more information click here!

One Empowered

One Empowered helps empower kids and teens with courses, equine therapy, 1 on 1 coaching, group classes, mobile crisis, substance abuse classes, and prevention of becoming a troubled adult.  To learn more, please click here.  

Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District

Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling Districk support the Magna community. They provide pick up on garbage, recycling, and green waste.  They provide this service for the health and safety of the community.
